Emotional Intelligence Is at the Heart of Our Learning Approach

Why Emotional Intelligence Is at the Heart of Our Learning Approach

As a parent, picking the right school for your child is a major decision, and understanding what truly impacts their long-term success is key. It turns out that emotional intelligence (EI) isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a core skill that can determine a child’s success in school and beyond.

At our school, we prioritize emotional intelligence alongside academic achievement because we know that managing emotions and working well with others are skills that matter just as much as grades. Harvard University’s research underscores this: students with high EI are more likely to thrive academically and socially. A study by Dr. Christina Hinton in 2021 found that schools that integrate emotional intelligence into their curriculums see marked improvements in student empathy, happiness, and test scores.

How We Foster Emotional Intelligence

Here’s how we make emotional intelligence a key part of our educational approach:

  • Small Class Sizes: Each child gets the attention they deserve. This individual focus helps teachers engage more deeply with students, guiding them through their emotions and helping them develop strong interpersonal skills.

  • Specialized Programs: We offer programs specifically designed to build emotional intelligence. Our students learn to navigate complex social environments from conflict resolution workshops to leadership training.

  • Learner-Led Environment: Our students take the lead in their learning journeys. This hands-on approach not only boosts their confidence but also improves their decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Just last week, our students showcased the power of this approach at our school exhibition, where they presented their projects to an audience, earned badges for their achievements, and proudly guided their families through their diverse and impressive work. This event included a 6-year-old reading his diary entry written from the perspective of a child in 1910 immigrating to America from Italy. This event wasn’t just a display of academic prowess—it was a testament to their growth as empathetic, confident, and creative individuals.

Why Our Learning Environment Matters

The physical space where children learn is just as important as the curriculum. According to a 2023 Harvard study on learning environments, children in well-designed classrooms—those with natural light, flexible seating, and nature access—show better focus, creativity, and overall well-being. Our school is designed to be a space where students feel inspired every day. Whether solving math problems on bean bags or reading in outside under a tree, our students enjoy an environment that makes learning a dynamic and enjoyable experience.
